I also am 23 and had this similar situation and have panhypothroidism, which is similar but has other things in addition. When I was soon to be graduating from college I knew I would know longer have my parents' insurance. I went to the doctor a month before I knew it was ending to get a new year long prescription, because I knew it might be some time before I could go back. If she is already off the insurance, then she probably can not do that. With that problem solved, I was more worried about getting hurt somehow. As much as I'm sure you are going to hate to hear this, she might be better off finding a low cost insurance plan or a job that pays health care benefits. With a medical condition, that is only going to increase the already way to inflated costs, if she ever needs to go the doctor or hospital for a serious illness or emergency.
References :
This is a sorry state of affairs isn't it, when people who work cannot afford healthcare, but those who sit home on the dole get it free. I would suggest calling the health department in you town to see what options are available. Next would be a county hospital. Most doctors will give a better price for a cash-paying patient who has no insurance. If you call the pharmaceutical companies, they sometimes have "compassionate use" programs whereby they give prescription medications free or at a greatly reduced price to those who cannot afford medication but must have it.
Good luck!
References :
I agree that the health dept. is a good place to start. If they can't help her, they can tell her where to go.
References :
I went to a Medical Clinic, no appointment necessary, they drew blood and checked my thyroid levels.
Cost to see the doctor was $65
blood work was $15
Look for low cost clinic.
Good luck.
I live in the south but I am sure they are everywhere.
References :
Yes, she needs to contact her county's Department of Health (it might be listed under social services).
If she qualifies (due to no insurance and low income) she can see a doctor for a fee based on her income. It will be a very small amount.
