Do you think I will be approved for Social Sec. Mental Disability?
I have applied for disability (last Oct) and now have a mental exam on Monday. I am very nervous. My husband took his life 2 yrs ago and cut our 15 yr old dog’s throat. He later died. I am still working very limited hrs for health care insurance. My short term memory is horrible, I live like a hermit and can’t sleep… My quality of life is ruined. I am 58 yrs old and was married to my husband for 32 yrs. I have so much documentation from psychologists, MD’S, etc. I can’t believe I have to go thru an exam… Any info would be appreciated.
What a terrible story. I’m so sorry that happened to you, and I completely understand how you could have become so deeply depressed. Have you been going through treatment (therapy, antidepressants, etc.)? Have you ever been hospitalized?
If you have a consistent and documented record of seeking treatment, then your chances are considerably better, but I have to be honest with you: if you’ve never been hospitalized, then it can sometimes be difficult to get disability payments for a mental condition. The burden of proof lies so heavily on you in such situations, because as I’m sure you can understand, it’s hard for anyone to "disprove" depression. It’s such an internal illness, which makes it hard for them to weed out people just trying to game the system. That’s the reason they’re making you go through that exam. They just want to make sure that you’re really in a bad way.
However, if, as you say, you have a lot of documentation, then your chances are much, much better. If your claim should be denied, though, then you might look into finding a lawyer to help you file a claim again. Sometimes it takes a professional to know how to assemble all of the documentation in a way that makes sense to the beaurocrats.
I can’t offer any more information than that, I’m afraid, but I do wish you the best of luck.
ETA: Hey, how did the exam go today?

A job would probably help keep you sane. It would get you out of the house and and give you a sense of purpose.
